As a first year student looking for and applying to internships, I often hear the following: “You are too young and it’s too early to apply for internships” “Young one, cherish the rosy days and your few years of campus life” “Just enjoy your long summer break from school” Yet, characteristically I didn’t listen to any of them, the working world intimidated me and I wanted a taste of it.

I am a Hong Kong national and currently studying Psychology at the University of Melbourne. I have an interest in people management and coupled with my psychology background, Elliott Scott HR appealed to me as a dynamic, global, boutique firm that specialises in HR recruitment. I got stuck straight into my 2 month long internship. My tasks were very varied and gave me a broad range of experience. I helped with day to day admin such as job writing, CV formatting and uploading jobs to our database and LinkedIn. I would also sit in on interviews with the consultants, learning more about the recruitment process and I helped to maintain the global database and manage the candidates. I also helped with the company’s marketing, I learnt more about the function and I had the opportunity to assist in hosting one of Elliott Scott HR’s quarterly events. It was my very first networking event and I met some amazing HR professionals, it was a great experience!

Throughout my internship I was encouraged to ask questions and in return I received valuable advice from all the consultants on both my future career and studies. They shared their experiences and I really valued this. My colleagues were very supportive, even when I made mistakes they would take the time to explain and give me the chance to do it again. This way I improved and became increasingly better at my tasks. If I were to tell you what I have learnt during my time at Elliott Scott HR, the list would be extensive. The experience was fantastic. It acted as a window for me, allowing me to have a glimpse of the industry and at the same time taught me how to be a good candidate. I also learnt about myself in relation to the working world, I now know where I can improve and I developed vital people skills which will aid me in my future career search.

The most important thing working in recruitment has taught me, particularly in relation to the consultative service Elliott Scott HR offer, is the importance of finding a job that suits you. This experience took me from timid to proactive; careless to detail-oriented, practical and organised. I would like to take this opportunity to give my sincere thanks to everyone at Elliott Scott HR, especially my fellow colleagues in the Hong Kong office, who gave me such a fantastic, unforgettable experience and were so welcoming.

I couldn’t have asked for better colleagues and mentors than you, I will definitely miss the laughter filled office and the daily jokes. I am forever thankful. It’s time to head back to University, transformed and l will seize every opportunity that lies ahead of me with the help and experience that this internship has provided me with.
