Mid-Level HR Business Partners This is one of the busiest levels of HR right now. Clients appear to be pushing more work down the HR chain of command and this level is getting squeezed. Alongside this, budgets are lower and that is certainly impacting the ability to hire at the Senior HR BP level.

The positive is that salaries have moved upwards, mainly because of supply and demand, but companies are realising that this is a busy area.

Senior HR Business Partners Long-standing business partners are always highly valued; they have tenure and experience on their side and that has worked well for them and their salary. The issue now is that more are being impacted by downsizing which is a pure cost exercise and people coming to the market are finding it challenging as they are up against more and more experienced people. The key here is flexibility, the more flexible you are the more chance you have of walking into a new role.

CHRO / CPO For small to mid-sized companies this is probably the toughest area right now. Companies ranging from 150 to 3,000 people are again looking at costs and this means they then review how strategic they want their HR function to be right now, especially if all the downsizing work has been completed.

My advice to this group is to be patient, it isn’t easy, and you will need to navigate several recruiters and contacts to secure the right role. You’ll also be one of a number of people in a process. Don’t get downhearted, remember that Tiger Woods only won 22.8% of the tournaments he entered and he is potentially the greatest golfer of all time. Securing a role at this level isn’t easy, but with the right attitude, network, and gradual economic recovery you will get there.
