HR is shifting. Are you?

HR is no longer the quiet function at the edge of business. It’s shifting to be the heartbeat of change – driving culture, shaping capability and enabling transformation.

As the role of HR expands, the expectations on HR leaders are shifting fast.

In our conversations with thousands of HR leaders and professionals globally, a pattern is emerging. Whether you’re building a team or growing your own career, three clear priorities are now defining the function:

1. Skills: A new blueprint for HR capability

Skills-first is more than a hiring trend — it’s a strategic shift.

HR leaders and professionals are being measured less by tenure or title, and more by adaptability, commercial acumen and curiosity. The ability to influence, communicate vision and lead through ambiguity has become non-negotiable.

2. Staying ahead: The resilience imperative

Under pressure to perform and transform, HR teams are often overlooked when it comes to wellbeing and resilience. But your people strategy is only as strong as the people driving it.

We’ve partnered with the Resilience Institute to launch a free diagnostic tool that lets HR leaders assess resilience at three levels — self, team and function. It’s already helping leaders rethink performance and support across global HR teams. You’ll also be anonymously contributing to our HR resilience report at the same time, which we’ll publish in October.

3. Strategy: From delivery to design

HR leaders are being asked to redesign how the function operates — not just deliver within existing systems. Whether it’s building agile teams, embedding AI or planning succession, today’s CHROs are expected to architect transformation, not just manage it.

This requires new thinking around structure, capability and support.
