A group of HR leaders recently gathered for an open roundtable focused on the growing role of artificial intelligence in the workplace. The session, led by Ben Redshaw, an experienced AI strategist and HR expert, created space for peer learning and candid discussion about opportunities, tools, risks, and cultural challenges related to AI adoption.

The session covered:

  • Practical Applications: Participants shared early-stage use cases in content automation, AI-powered coaching, talent acquisition, and chatbot support. Tools are being explored to streamline tasks from job description creation to leave management.
  • Talent & Recruitment: AI is gaining traction in TA through automated matching, transcription, and survey summarisation tools, yet most agreed that adoption in niche hiring remains limited.
  • Culture & Change: Building AI fluency was seen as critical, with examples including internal “AI Academies,” role modeling from leaders, and culture-building events like AI fairs. Startups appear more agile, while legacy firms face cultural resistance and risk aversion.
  • Data & Governance: Concerns over confidentiality and compliance (especially in light of the EU AI Act) are prompting firms to favour enterprise-grade, privacy-secure AI tools.
  • Value Creation & ROI: Early returns focus on time savings, freeing up HR teams for strategic work. Still, proving hard ROI remains a challenge. Many are beginning with hour-saved metrics to build business cases.
  • Ethics & Oversight: The groupcautioned against over-reliance on AI for qualitative interpretation, highlighting the importance of human empathy and contextual judgment.
  • Future Directions: The group discussed pilots in real-time gender pay monitoring, AI-assisted compensation planning, and employee sentiment analysis via tools integrated with platforms like Slack.

Overall the session highlighted that AI is emerging as a powerful enabler for HR, especially in reducing admin burden and enhancing insight. Success hinges on secure implementation, strong governance, cross-functional collaboration, and a clear focus on solving real business problems, not chasing hype. Continued experimentation and peer learning were encouraged to help organisations navigate this fast-evolving space.
