As we begin 2026, HR continues to operate at the centre of organisational transformation. Economic conditions, rapid technological change, and shifting employee expectations have shaped a challenging yet promising outlook for the year ahead.
Looking ahead, HR teams will play a pivotal role in building capability, driving culture, and preparing organisations for the future of work.
Key themes I am currently discussing with our HR community:
- Economic stabilisation & workforce planning
Hiring remains measured, but organisations are shifting back toward long-term capability building. HR will focus on strategic workforce planning, stronger talent pipelines and increased internal mobility to support business resilience.
- AI, automation & HR technology
AI adoption will move from experimentation to embedded usage. HR teams must balance efficiency with responsible implementation while using enhanced analytics to drive insight-led decisions. Upskilling employees and leaders in digital capability becomes essential.
- Leadership capability
With ongoing organisational change, strong leadership is critical. HR will prioritise coaching, performance development, wellbeing and building emotionally intelligent leaders who can inspire trust and navigate ambiguity. You can read more on this in our recent report in partnership with the Resilience Institute.
- Evolving hybrid work models
Hybrid working continues to mature. The focus for 2026 will be clarity, fairness and manager capability. HR will refine policies, strengthen collaboration and ensure flexibility aligns with organisational needs.
- DEI built on measurable impact
This is the one of the biggest adjustments I have seen this year as DEI remains a core priority, but organisations expect evidence-based progress. HR will drive data-led initiatives, embed inclusive practices in all people processes and hold leaders accountable for measurable outcomes. DEI needs to be truly embedded to the culture of the business, and we expect to see a renewed focus on culture and employee experience in 2026.
- Reward, EVP and retention
Employees expect transparency, fairness and personalised benefits. HR teams will continue to redesign reward structures, promote financial wellbeing and strengthen employee value propositions that appeal across generations.
What are we seeing in Europe?
We are also witnessing a meaningful shift in senior HR hiring across Europe. Over the past several months, activity has noticeably picked up across Southern Europe, particularly for HR Director and Head of HR roles. Much of this momentum is being driven by financial services companies, where ongoing transformation and evolving regulatory demands continue to create space for seasoned HR leadership. We are seeing a similar pattern across the Nordic markets including Sweden and Denmark where companies are investing more intentionally in their HR infrastructure to support growth. This regional acceleration reflects a wider push by organisations to strengthen their people functions as they prepare for the next phase of expansion.
Alongside this, there has been a distinct rise in roles tied to Talent Development, Leadership, and Learning across Europe. As businesses scale and compete more fiercely for specialist skills, they are placing greater emphasis on leadership strength, succession planning, and continuous development. This renewed focus speaks to a broader understanding that investing in talent is central not only to performance, but to long-term organisational resilience.
What should our HR professionals prioritise for 2026:
- Strategic workforce planning to future-proof skills and capability
- Strong data & people analytics to inform decisions and influence leaders
- AI and digital fluency to guide responsible adoption and streamline processes
- Leadership development & coaching to build resilience and performance
- Change and transformation expertise to support organisational evolution
- Culture, inclusion and employee experience to attract, retain and engage talent
- Agile operating models enabling HR teams to be responsive and commercially aligned
