Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI)

DEI professionals help create a work environment where difference is embraced, and individuals can flourish. Within any organisation, employees should feel safe and able to be their authentic and true selves without fear of discrimination. Those working in DEI roles help companies to set a level playing field for all employees to reach their full potential. 

This is a fairly new HR division that we are increasingly seeing and assisting organisations recruit into. Generally organisations bring on a DEI professional at the senior level but there are also junior to mid-level roles depending on the size of the organisation and the investment being made to build a larger DEI team. 

A DEI professional will:

  • Advise leadership on DEI matters and partner with them to define the organisations DEI strategy 
  • Create, manage and optimise practices and policies and assess the extent to which they support or hinder the organisation’s DEI goals
  • Build an inclusive culture 
  • Advise on the development and delivery of diversity recruitment, retention, and promotion practices
  • Collaborate with the communications team and recruiters to drive external and internal diversity related messages
  • Keep on top of trends, laws and regulations, and other factors relating to DEI programs
  • Create internal networks that enable employees to discuss their views and feel comfortable and heard in the workplace 
  • Celebrate diversity in the organisation through events and awareness sessions
  • Coach and upskill managers and employees on the value of diversity 
  • Gather diversity analytics and reporting to track ROI and conform to any government reporting 

Job titles for the DEI discipline include: Chief Diversity Officer, Chief DEI Officer, Chief Culture Officer, Chief Equality Officer, Head of Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging, Vice President of Diversity, VP Of DEI, Director of Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging, DEI Lead, Diversity or Inclusion Manager, DEI Manager, Diversity Program Manager, Employment Equity Manager, Equality Manager, Diversity Coordinator, Diversity Business Partner, Diversity Consultant, Diversity Trainer, Inclusion Specialist, DEI Analyst, Diversity Assistant.
